WHY T-SHIRTS?
We were screen-printing our own designs on t-shirts whose origin we could not verify. Choosing primarily t-shirts due to their ubiquity, simplicity and symbolism - of course it is 'just a t-shirt' but things aren't always as they seem and we're hoping for transparency.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
At this point in the capitalist cycle goods are often produced in countries with ever 'cheaper' means of production, often hiding behind outsourced contracted manufacturers. Imagine little regard for the people producing the goods and less again for the natural environment.
SO YOU KNOW WHERE THEY COME FROM?
Correct. We can vouch for every step of the garment production-chain because we're involved, get dirty ourselves and know everyone else helping bring them to life. Most work is in Brunswick, a traditional manufacturing neighbourhood urbanising rapidly, 5km from the centre of Melbourne, Australia. Made in small batches, all t-shirts are designed, cut, sewn and printed by our posse.
NO SWEATSHOPS WERE USED?
To say there is no sweat equity would be a lie (!) but it is safe to say our garments are sweatshop free :) Cut by our Master Cutter Siosifa with 25+ years in the rag trade, sewn by machinists working standard hours and paid above award rates per garment as calculated by the Textile Clothing and Footwear Union of Australia and printed by us (Cassia) with the help of Dale at NMBQ.
WHY ORGANIC COTTON?
Benefits include better health for farmers and their land, not to mention saving rivers, water-tables and food production from nasty chemical run-off and contamination. Plus it's wonderfully soft and luxurious to touch - from field to fabric, no toxic fertilisers or chemicals used. Unfortunately most cotton grown in Australia is chemically controlled and possibly GMO -a massive strain on waterways. Our cotton is sourced from India and fed by rain. Cotton production is water intensive, in Australia overly relying on irrigation drawn from depleted and exhausted rivers.
WHAT ABOUT SCREEN PRINTING?
We print almost exclusively with Permaset Aqua 100% solvent free water based range of environmentally friendly inks. Manufactured in Sydney since 1958, Permaset is recognised by both fine artists and the professional printing trade as a premier product.

The eco-social crisis is one of values and priorities. Self interest and subjective corruption distort cultural artefacts, civic, educational and systemic structures in their image. Communication
designers can reproduce cultural norms and represent the non-human natural world as a space
open to continued exploitation – or they can reveal ecological circumstances and nurture
ecological ways of knowing.
Ultimately, the options open to designers are determined by not only their employers’
demands but also by any work they do beyond the capitalist order. In theory, designers
could transform the world by making ecologically literate and socially responsible
communication, products and spaces. In practice this will not happen within the
workplaces of the vast majority as long as the model of development deprioritizes
ecological and social values – and design practice follows suit.
